Judah Low ben Bezalel (Maharal)
(c. 1525-1609)
   Bohemian rabbi, talmudist, moralist and mathema-tician. He served as chief rabbi of Moravia from 1553 to 1573, and later settled in Prague. There he founded a yeshivah, organized circles for the study of the Mishnah, and regulated the statutes of the hevra kaddisha. Revered for his piety and asceticism, he was active in all aspects of communal life, partic-ularly education. He wrote studies of halakhah, aggadah, ethics, philosophy and homiletics, as well as rabbinic commentaries. According to legend, he was the creator of the Prague golem.
